The Abiola Initiative in Music Education
In the fall of 2007, in conjunction with the Abiola Initiative in Music Education (aime), the Preparatory & Continuing Studies Department began new outreach programs to serve economically disadvantaged students without access to music instruction. With a focus on impacting Houston’s Third Ward, this innovative program is providing twice weekly music classes for over 150 preschoolers at the GCCSA Third Ward Head Start and the University of Houston Child Care Center. Through aime, over 40 children involved in the afterschool program at Yellowstone Academy are exploring instruments of the band and orchestra.
In the spring of 2008, a new pilot program was started that offers private piano lessons to children at Yellowstone Academy. Furthermore, children in all three programs will experience concerts by Moores School of Music faculty, and parents and teachers will be able to attend workshops to learn how to further facilitate daily music activity for the children.
Through the rich resources of student teachers and master teachers at the Moores School of Music, aime provides significant, in-depth musical experiences to children in our area. With a goal of expanding to serve more students, the Preparatory & Continuing Studies Department gratefully accepts donations.
“We would like to help bring music to children who might not otherwise experience its beauty and joy,” the Abiola Family.
