Piano Program (ages 5-18)

Instructors: Dr. Sooah Chae, Chien-Jung Chen and Kristopher Walters

Fee: see below

Fall:16 weeks, Spring: 19 weeks, Summer: 8 weeks

Lesson times arranged with Instructor

Description: Students are given weekly lessons by professional instructors. Lesson times may be arranged for thirty (30), forty-five (45), or sixty (60) minutes and are supplemented by mandatory group performance and theory classes held throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. Group classes will be scheduled on five (5) Saturdays throughout each semester and each class will last two (2) hours. Students will be grouped according to age. Students entering the program in the summer should be advised that participation in the aforementioned group activities is required for admittance. Students will perform memorized pieces on three (3) recitals throughout the school year. The curriculum includes performance technique, theory, music history, and general musicianship. Students are expected to take the Annual State Theory Exam as well as perform in other festivals and workshops recommended by the teacher. The fall session consists of 16 lessons and the spring semester has 19 lessons. The summer session is 8 lessons. Fees will be pro-rated if the student begins lessons after the semester start date. All private lessons and group classes are held at the UH Main Campus.

Requirements: Students must call the office for an Instructor referral and schedule an interview with an instructor before admittance to the program. Commitment to the program is expected for the entire year or three (3) semesters: fall, spring, and summer. HOWEVER, the first semester of study is considered to be a trial basis. This means that the student's overall progress, commitment and compliance with the program will be reassessed at the close of the first semester. The Instructor reserves the right to then continue on with the student, to recommend the student to the PCS Student Teacher program, or to not recommend the student for further study. Attendance at all lessons, classes, and recitals is required. To ensure success, students must practice daily for at least the length of their lesson. This is an intense program for serious students and committed families. View recital and group class schedule »
